FAMILY VISA ROUTES

How We Can Help

Family visa eligibility depends on the relationship and the circumstances of the applicant and the family member in the UK.

Dependants on Other Routes

PARTNER & SPOUSE

Joining Your Partner in the UK

The partner route has specific requirements concerning your relationship, your partner's status in the UK, finances and English language ability.

Your relationship must meet the relevant family visa requirements.
Your partner must have an eligible status in the UK.
You may need to meet the applicable financial requirement.
You may need to demonstrate the required knowledge of English.
Evidence should clearly support the genuine nature of the relationship.

Relationship evidence matters

Depending on your circumstances, evidence can include marriage or civil partnership documents, evidence of living together, shared financial responsibilities and other evidence of an ongoing relationship.

If you do not live together, additional evidence may be needed to demonstrate your ongoing commitment to one another.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Financial & English Requirements

Some family routes require applicants to meet financial and English language requirements. The exact requirements depend on the route and individual circumstances.

01

Financial Requirement

For a partner or spouse application, the current minimum income requirement is usually £29,000 a year. Different rules and exceptions can apply, including certain transitional circumstances.

Depending on the circumstances, income, savings and other permitted sources may be relevant.

02

English Language Requirement

Applicants on relevant family routes may need to demonstrate their knowledge of English. The required level and accepted evidence depend on the type of application.

There are exemptions and different requirements for some applicants and circumstances.

CHILDREN & PARENTS

Family Applications Involving Children

Applications involving children can depend on the child's age, living arrangements, parental responsibility and the immigration status of family members in the UK.

The child's age and circumstances are important.
Living arrangements may need to be evidenced.
Parental responsibility may need to be shown.
The immigration status of the parent or child can affect the available route.

The child's circumstances matter

Family applications involving children require careful consideration of the child's age, residence, family relationships and the status of the people involved.

Where parental responsibility or access is relevant, appropriate evidence should be prepared to support the application.

ADULT DEPENDENT RELATIVE

When a Family Member Needs Long-Term Care

The Adult Dependent Relative route is a specialist route with strict requirements. It may apply where an adult needs long-term personal and household care from a qualifying relative who is living permanently in the UK.

The applicant must generally be aged 18 or over.
Long-term care must be required because of age, illness or disability.
The required care must not be available or affordable in the country of residence.
The UK relative must be able to accommodate and care for the applicant.

A specialist route

Adult Dependent Relative applications require detailed evidence about the applicant's care needs, available care and the circumstances of the family member in the UK.
