STUDENT ROUTE

Is the Student Visa the Right Route?

The Student route is designed for eligible students who want to study in the UK on a qualifying course with a licensed student sponsor.

You have an offer from an eligible licensed student sponsor.
You have the required Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
You can meet the relevant financial requirements, where applicable.
You meet the applicable English-language requirements.
You can provide the required supporting documents for your circumstances.

Your circumstances matter

Student visa requirements can vary depending on your age, course, education provider, nationality, previous immigration history and other circumstances.

Some students may also need additional evidence, such as a tuberculosis test or an ATAS certificate, depending on their circumstances.

CONFIRMATION OF ACCEPTANCE FOR STUDIES

Understanding Your CAS

Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a key part of a Student visa application. Your education provider issues the CAS after offering you a place on the course.

01

Course Information

Your CAS contains important information about your course and education provider.

02

Personal Details

Your application should accurately reflect the personal and course information connected with your CAS.

03

Supporting Evidence

Other evidence may be required depending on your circumstances and the requirements of your application.

FINANCIAL EVIDENCE

Be Prepared to Evidence Your Finances

Student visa applicants may need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds for their course fees and living costs, depending on their circumstances.

Discuss Your Application

Course Fees

The relevant course-fee amount is normally shown on your CAS and forms part of the financial assessment where evidence is required.

Living Costs

The required maintenance funds depend on where you will study and your individual circumstances.

28-Day Requirement

Where financial evidence is required, the funds generally need to have been held for the required consecutive period before the application.

Evidence Must Be Appropriate

The type and format of acceptable financial evidence can depend on your circumstances.

FAMILY MEMBERS

Can Your Partner or Children Join You?

Not every Student visa holder can bring dependants. Eligibility depends on the type and level of course, sponsorship and other specific requirements.

If you are considering bringing your partner or children, we recommend obtaining advice based on your exact course and circumstances before making travel arrangements.

Discuss Dependants

Dependant eligibility is restricted

Current rules allow dependants only in specified circumstances. For example, certain government sponsored students and eligible postgraduate students may qualify.

For postgraduate courses beginning from 1 January 2024, the course generally needs to be a PhD, doctorate or other qualifying research-based higher degree for the relevant dependant route.

DOCUMENTS

Prepare the Right Supporting Evidence

The documents required will depend on your circumstances. Typical Student visa applications can involve several important documents.

01

Passport

A valid passport or other acceptable travel document is required.

02

CAS

Your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from your education provider.

03

Financial Evidence

Evidence of funds where the financial requirement applies to your application.

04

Additional Documents

Depending on your circumstances, additional evidence may be required.
